Recognizing Fractions Greater Than One

Understanding Whole Circles and Thirds

Imagine a circle representing one whole. If we divide this circle into equal parts, say thirds, each part is 1/3 of the whole.

Counting the Thirds

In a scenario where multiple thirds are shaded, you might encounter more than one whole. For instance, if five out of these 1/3 pieces are shaded, we have a fraction greater than one. Let's break it down:

  1. Each whole is divided into three equal pieces.

  2. Each piece is 1/3 of the whole.

  3. When we count the shaded pieces and find five of them, we recognize that we have 5/3 shaded.

Visualizing Fractions Greater Than One

Visual aids, like shaded circles, help in understanding that fractions can represent values greater than one whole. For example, shading five thirds demonstrates that we have more than one whole but less than two.

Understanding fractions is a crucial skill in math, and recognizing fractions greater than one is a key part of that journey. Fortunately, Khan Academy offers an excellent resource to help students grasp this concept. You can watch the full explanation and tutorial by Lindsay Spears here.
